4 Of the Best Modern Paranormal Creatures

Modern paranormal creatures
Optional audio transcript

With looking into the old, you must also look into the new. While some of these creatures are evolutions of older ones, they still are a modern creature of the otherworldly. Much like how older creatures were a vision of a set of even older creatures, the modern paranormal creatures have their influences. You can look at many of these creatures and see some resemblance to how their ancestors evolved.

This includes the main paranormal creatures:

  • Witches
  • Vampires
  • Dragons
  • Zombies
  • Demons

Although demons are just remnants of older demons, they can also be from just bad things that arose in the past. Our modern paranormal creatures are fascinating and bring in so much influence because of our global media in general. Back in the day, before the internet, creatures like these were cultural and there were many types in different parts of the world.

Why hello there, again, Bigfoot

One of the most popular paranormal creatures of our time is Bigfoot. He is everywhere and I have spoken about this creature or band of creatures many times. I think the reason he is spoken about so often is because there is so much information on what Bigfoot means. This creature is also in multiple cultures. Some say it is one Bigfoot, others say it is small colonies of either a forgotten evolution of humans or just a smarter ape.

To be fair, though, we are just smarter apes.

The cutest Yeti you’ll ever see.

From documentaries to reality television shows, from firsthand accounts to organizations, this beast is here to stay until they find some sort of real time evidence. I still think it is a little bit strange that a creature would be hanging out in the woods and sort of approach humans, but stranger things have happened.

The media really brought the creature to life

The idea of a smart killer ape is seen in movies over the past 60 years, one being called The Ape from 1940. It isn’t the best appropriation of Bigfoot, but the ape always reminded me of how Bigfoot would probably react in that scenario. Otherwise, this modern paranormal creature is seen in many movies from the 1970’s, such as:

  • Bigfoot from 1970
  • The Legend of Boggy Creek from 1972
  • Sasquatch: The Legend of Bigfoot from 1976
  • Curse of Bigfoot from 1978
  • The Capture of Bigfoot from 1979

There are just as many reality television shows, such as Sasquatch, Chasing Bigfoot, and Monsters and Mysteries in America. It is not mind boggling that these popped up because Bigfoot is a great influencer. If any of the species type had an Instagram suddenly today, it would become more popular than any other on the platform in its history.

Loch Ness has become an obsession

As much as you can love Bigfoot and the mystery, you’ll become even more obsessed with the Loch Ness Monster. Originally a Scottish paranormal creature in modern media, this shy dinosaur has many cousins all around the world.

  • Russia’s Labynkyr Monster
  • Serbia’s Chany
  • Uganda’s Lukwata
  • New South Wales’ Hawkesbury River Monster
  • Argentina’s Nahuelito

A plethora of similar creatures that haven’t been debunked as being trash on a log, such as in China’s Yangtze river monster. Additionally, the Loch Ness, otherwise known as Nessie, may herself have been debunked after scientists tested the waters of the lake along with taking a closer look into the sightings. BBC reports that Nessie could just be a giant eel or just doesn’t really exist.

Of course, you can look at this and go, “Duh”. It would be easy to dismiss the paranormal, but the Scottish National Heritage has a plan in place just in case the Loch Ness Monster was ever caught. It may play out just like the reaction plan the U.S. government has with zombies, but it does exist.

The media didn’t go as far with this modern paranormal creature

Maybe it is because the Loch Ness Monster doesn’t really scream terror and suspense, but media on Nessie is short and sweet. Most could be considered kids movies, like Nessie & Me, The Water Horse, and even a Scooby Doo movie from 2004. Travel Channel does have a documentary, but even I hadn’t heard of it before all of this.

Nessie isn’t seen in many other places. The Loch Ness Center does have a tour, gift shop, and an ongoing project over the creature.

The elusive Chupacabra

This one is a bit older, being first sighted in 1995, but it is still a modern paranormal creature. This creature was first sighted in Puerto Rico and is still a mystery to this day. It is mostly seen as a type of dog or wolf and possibly something rabid or a hybrid. The Chupacabra is a vampire of sorts, sucking the blood from its enemies. Like the others, this modern paranormal creature has no physical attributions to show that it is real.

There is only speculation, firsthand accounts, and folktales. Still, it has somehow found its way into Central America, North America, and China. Of course, there isn’t a mythical creature sighting without one person using their resources to find them. According to All That’s Interesting, a man named Benjamin Radford worked on figuring out the Chupacabra for about 5 years. He found some firsthand accounts, but never located the actual creature.

The media had a field day with this one

They really did. A blood-sucking creature that isn’t in a book thousands of years old is a spectacular piece of comedy and horror. Even shows like Futurama did an episode on a Chupacabra-like creature. Most of the horror movies are B-list, but that doesn’t make them any less terrifying.

Most of these horror films take after the original translation of the Chupacabra, which means “goat-sucker” in Spanish. Many show a tale of a detective or a survivor seeking out the creature, or creatures to end its tyranny.

SCP (Secure, Contain, Protect) and their massive list

Now, this one is interesting because it is a very new type of paranormal creature. Created by many around the world, it is a containment system for a variety of horror-filled paranormal creatures. Some were created in labs, while others just exist. Some are just items while others, like SCP-954, are actual creatures.

The original SCP logo was designed by far2, based on a free asset from Adobe Illustrator’s “Mad Science” asset library, which in turn was based on the electrostatic discharge warning symbol. There are 999 SCPs and while some are still “active”, others have been retired or thrown out as a joke. This is modern paranormal creature creation at its finest because it is taken very seriously as well as having some cultural influences. Some of these SCPs are not creatures, still, but they have some influence on where they may have been created. There is even an organization for these creations called the SCP Foundation, founded in 2008.

Oh, the media on SCP is huge

Because the idea of SCP was created possibly via the internet, it devotes its success to a massive influence from social media. There is even lore on how Slenderman is not an SCP but was devolved from SCP 582, which is a literal paranormal meme.

You are probably going to point out that there is are games in relation to SCPs. These were created after the foundation’s start, one releasing in 2012 and another in 2021. This is what happens when you create paranormal creatures, or even have a sighting of one that enters the realm of paranormal creatures. I would consider SCPs to be paranormal because even though they are brand new, they do hold significance to the paranormal realm.

Some are even more convincing than what they need to be. I mean, SCP 582 created mass hysteria even though it is a digital being that is more of an idea than anything else. It has a hold to internet culture and has been proven to exist in a form that promotes, albeit promotes badly, actions in the real world.

There are others out there stewing in the muck

No matter how old or young a paranormal creature is to society, it still has a hold to the culture. Our cultures nowadays are more online thanks to the Internet. As you can witness with Neil Gaiman’s American Gods, there is always something new being created with new ideas. Ours, in this case, is technology.

Additionally, with technology, there will be an evolution of sorts of paranormal creatures as it is a brand-new undertaking for the creatures to exist in. It could be new Gods next time, or maybe just a Pokémon level of new creatures that come to reality to explore what our world has created.
